Why do we volunteer?

David Elliott, IT Tutor | Focus on Vision CICI really enjoy volunteering with Focus on Vision because it is an opportunity to help visually-impaired people to learn new skills and give them some company and support. Through simple IT lessons, I have helped a number of them to become much more proficient using a computer to perform tasks such as writing letters, sending e-mail, browsing the internet and shopping online.

Joyce Chesney, Audio Reader | Focus on Vision CICFocus On Vision C.I.C. deserve support which is why I am a volunteer. Four times a year I record a journal called Benhealth from the Benenden Healthcare Trust, so that visually impaired people can listen to the magazine.

I set aside two days to record the 30 plus tracks. I read each track onto a programme called Audacity. I really enjoy doing this and look forward to receiving Benhealth to record, quarterly.

I feel I have personally gained from this program; I have met people I may never have crossed paths with, and gained friendships too.

As my family is grown, my ‘baby’ is about to turn eighteen (and even my ‘puppies’ have left us now at the grand dog years of seventeen!). I was feeling the increasing onslaught of ‘empty nest syndrome’ as I was becoming less and less needed and was considering returning to being a foster carer again when this opportunity came along. It made me realise that it was my turn again now. My turn to give something of myself to different people…peoplee already grown, with their own stories and histories to tell. Now I know that I am appreciated on a different level.
