Today there are about 3.2 million people in the UK who have been diagnosed with diabetes
- A further 630,000 who do not even know they have the condition.
- Three people die from diabetes-related complications every hour
- A 100 toe, foot and lower limb amputations a week are caused by diabetes.
- It is also the leading cause of blindness in people of working age in the UK.
The numbers reflect how serious this is, with approximately 10 per cent of the NHS budget being currently spent on diabetes.
